Image alt text generator for real publishing work

Missing alt text is one of those things I notice late, usually when a page is otherwise ready to ship. The image is done. The layout is done. Then I still have to write ten small descriptions.

I use AltCaption for the first draft: upload an image, get a plain description, then tighten it for the page.

Quick answer

An image alt text generator is useful for the first draft. I still edit the result for the page, because the best alt text depends on why the image is there.

How I write useful alt text

I start with the visible subject, then add the detail a reader needs to understand the page. If the image carries information, I write that information clearly.

For product photos, that usually means product type, color, material, and visible details. Blog images need the scene or screenshot. Charts need the main point the reader should take from the visual.

  • Describe the image, not the file name.
  • Keep keywords out unless they naturally describe the image.
  • Edit AI output when brand, product, or page context matters.
  • Leave decorative images empty instead of inventing text.

Where AltCaption fits

AltCaption gives me the draft I do not want to type by hand. That is enough for most publishing workflows: blog images, product pages, CMS uploads, galleries, and social posts.

I still review the result. The model can see the image, but it does not know why I put that image on the page.

Examples

  • Black leather backpack with two front pockets on a white background.
  • Screenshot of an analytics dashboard showing rising search impressions.
  • Woman in a red jacket standing beside a mountain lake at sunrise.

Common questions

Can I use generated alt text as-is?

Sometimes. I still check product names, visible text, and page context before publishing.

Should every image have alt text?

Meaningful images should. Decorative images can use empty alt text so screen readers skip them.
