Bulk edit Shopify image alt text from a product CSV
Upload or paste a Shopify product export. I find image rows with blank alt text, generate up to three drafts for review, and give you a Shopify-ready CSV without sorting the file or replacing existing alt text.

1. Add a Shopify product CSV
Find product image rows with blank alt text
Upload a small export or paste its CSV text. The audit keeps every column and row in place, then checks Image Src rows where Image Alt Text is blank.
Up to 1 MB or 500 data rows. Nothing is uploaded during the audit.
From Shopify export to reviewed alt text
- Export products from Shopify and keep a backup before editing.
- Do not sort the CSV. Shopify warns that sorting can separate variants and image URLs.
- Audit Handle, Image Src, and Image Alt Text, then generate a three-row sample.
- Review each draft against the product image and its page context.
- Download the preserved CSV and review Shopify's import details before applying it.
What AltCaption changes
- Only previewed Image Alt Text cells that were blank receive generated drafts.
- Existing alt text, headers, values, and the original row order stay in place. Formula-like spreadsheet cells are escaped on export.
- Rows without public HTTP image URLs are ignored.
- The audit runs in your browser. Only preview image URLs and limited product context are sent for generation.
- Generated alt text is a draft. A person still needs to check visible details, variants, surrounding copy, and decorative images.
When the Shopify CSV workflow is useful
Shopify lets you edit one product image at a time in the media editor. That works for a few missing descriptions. A product CSV is the practical option when the same job covers many products or images.
AltCaption uses the CSV as a review queue. It finds public product image URLs with a blank Image Alt Text cell, generates a small sample, and leaves populated alt text alone. You can check the wording before moving the full catalog into Bulk.

Keep the exported structure
Shopify warns that sorting a product CSV can separate products from their image links. AltCaption keeps the headers, rows, and row order from the file you provide.
Review overwrite behavior
Shopify can overwrite matching product fields when you import with matching handles. Keep a backup, review the uploaded file details, and check the generated alt text before starting the import.

This preview expects Shopify's older Handle, Image Src, and Image Alt Text headers. Shopify says older column names remain backward-compatible, but headers are case-sensitive. AltCaption does not promise a direct Shopify write.
